"You never told Pete about TCF?" Lee asked curiously. They'd talked about it, back when Lee was in his sophomore year and Tony had come back for Homecoming. "Not ever?"
"No. I finally had to tell him something, so I was as honest as I could be. Secret society, I took my word seriously, there could be weird things in the future. But nothing that would ever damage my relationship with him, in any sense. He trusts me."
"Good," Lee said softly. Tony deserved that. Everyone did, he supposed, but Tony had earned it so many times over that Lee would probably damage anyone that stood in the way of Tony's happiness. "You know what? I think I've turned out to be fiercely loyal."
"Of course you have." Again, Tony disarmed him with the simplicity of the statement. He'd done that routinely at school. "It's a good look on you. Tell me how you found Joey. At school?"
"No, actually." Lee filled Tony in on the arrangement of Meadowlark Court and how he'd found Joey's pin. "Then I came home and spent, like, half an hour trying to figure out what to do. I panicked a little."
"What did Matt say?" Tony asked thoughtfully.
Lee snorted. "What makes you think I called Matt?"
"Don't play me, boy." Tony laughed at him. "What did he tell you?" Lee sighed. They all knew him too well to play games, even if the games were silly and fun. "He said I needed to stop over-thinking everything, and let Joey do what he was going to do. Hang out, talk, get to know him. Basically, don't make assumptions and welcome a new friend into my life."
"Sounds like good advice to me." Lee could almost see Tony nodding in approval. "Were you having insecurity issues again?" "Again? Still." Lee shrugged. "It's not going to go away, Tony. Everything was formed too early and too deeply for me not to have this... this... thing in me. But I can shove it aside. I did."
"Good for you." Tony's voice had dropped to a soft tone, a little bit too close to sympathy. "So when was this?"
"A week ago. Joey gave me space -- turns out he called his Senior and was told to keep it calm until he got a signal."
"Joey..." Tony sounded thoughtful, then he chuckled. "Joey was a very enthusiastic guy." "No kidding." Lee turned his head and looked at the pillow Joey had used the night before. Enthusiastic was a good word. "He's got this thing about movies -- talked for about an hour tonight."
"Cool." Tony had completely lost the nervous energy he'd had when he answered the phone. "That is so cool, Lee. All of it."
"That's what Matt said." Lee smiled. "It is, really. We've got all this history and we didn't even know it."
"How is he doing? He's a chemist? He's happy?" "Yeah. He's happy." Lee made himself sit up and then go to turn off the overhead light. "He's working for a big company, has a nice place, friends.
